I Was Just Thinking About – ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE.
From 2011 to 2016, CBS produced
the TV Series, Person Of Interest, a science-fiction crime drama. It featured an ex-assassin and a wealthy programmer who save
lives via computer surveillance – Artificial Intelligence - that sends them the
identities of civilians involved in impending crimes. The idea of the program
was to intercept that “person of interest” and change the pending negative
outcome with a positive result.
In 2007, Stanford University Computer
Science Department did an extensive study on Artificial Intelligence. They
conclude: “Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the science and engineering of
making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of
using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to
confine itself to methods that are biologically observable. Intelligence is the
computational part of the ability to achieve goals in the world. Varying kinds
and degrees of intelligence occur in people, many animals and some machines.”
The study went on to
conclude the obvious: “Computer programs have plenty of speed and memory but
their abilities correspond to the intellectual mechanisms that program
designers understand well enough to put in programs…The matter is further
complicated by the fact that the cognitive sciences still have not succeeded in
determining exactly what the human abilities are…this demonstrates that the
program designers lack understanding of the intellectual mechanisms required to
do the task efficiently.
Is there a Biblical viewpoint regarding
Intelligence versus Artificial Intelligence? Jeremiah 9:23-24 (ESV), “Let not the wise
man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the
rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he
understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who
practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these
things I delight, declares the Lord.” An additional
thought from Isaiah 29:13-14 (NIV), “These people…their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught…I will
astound these people with wonder upon
wonder; the wisdom of the wise will
perish, the intelligence of the
intelligent will vanish.” Lastly, I
Corinthians 2:7-10(a), “We declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has
been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age
understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of
glory. As it is written: What no eye has seen, what
no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived the
things God has prepared for those who love him - these are the things God has
revealed to us by his Holy Spirit.” How does God view all of the AI
explorations and conclusions? In I Corinthians 3:19-20, “For the wisdom of this world is
folly with God. For it is written: He catches the wise in their craftiness,” and
again: “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”
Prayerfully – consider these things with
me.
