Abstractions and Considerations

Abstraction No. 1: Life is lived in a hurried pace and the thoughts or ideals from a previous, more tranquil time are forgotten or unheeded. There is a song titled "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" (music by Jerome Kern; lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II) from their 1927 musical play "Show Boat," that includes these lyrics: "Fish got to swim, birds got to fly, I got to love one man till I die. Can't help lovin' dat man of mine."
We now have the crisis of a Gulf Oil Spill and the chilling effect that fish can’t swim and birds can’t fly there now. Seafood may be impacted for years to come, and the migratory birds habitat may take years to clean – and a question pondered is – will the fish survive and swim there again and will the birds survive and fly there once again.

Abstraction No. 2: Glenn Beck has caused a literary stir by using the words of Rudyard Kipling in a promotion of his newest book, The Overton Window. The words are from The Gods of the Copybook Headings, and state:
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man-
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began:-
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wobbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!
The critics, without knowing the words were by Rudyard Kipling deemed them to be without merit, An interviewer with The Huffington Post referred to the words as "stupid, simple."

Consideration No. 1: What’s even more intriguing is that some of the words used by Kipling were taken from the Bible - - Proverbs 26:11 – “The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.” The Apostle Peter uses them in II Peter 2:19-22. Peter is writing about a world that has alienated itself from God, and says: “They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity--for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: A dog returns to its vomit, and, A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud."

Consideration No. 2: Solomon spoke the sayings of the wise in Proverbs 24:23-34, These also are sayings of the wise: “To show partiality in judging is not good: Whoever says to the guilty, You are innocent - peoples will curse him and nations denounce him. But it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and rich blessing will come upon them…Finish your outdoor work and get your fields ready; after that, build your house. Do not testify against your neighbor without cause, or use your lips to deceive. Do not say, I'll do to him as he has done to me; I'll pay that man back for what he did. I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw: A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest - and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.” As societies and nations struggle to survive, it is wise to turn from those things which breed and cause decadence. A free people can choose to live in a world of Abstractions and struggle to survive, or they can embrace the stated Considerations and be guided into a pathway of wisdom and sound judgments. Consider these things with me!

Boy-Oh-Boycott

When disaster strikes, what should one do? There appear to be at least two possibilities: (1) Devise a Solution. Let ingenuity – part of the fiber and backbone of this nation’s development – be turned loose to create solutions and remedies for the crises at hand. Last Saturday-Sunday, the TV Program – Huckabee – had a string of ordinary people with possible solutions for the Gulf Oil Crisis. Sadly, government bureaucracy has not seen fit to try any or all of these possibilities – even though the demonstration of them showed a positive result. (2) Organize a Boycott. There are people in our nation whose response to a crisis is to see it as another opportunity to be in the limelight by organizing a Boycott. One of the downsides to such an effort is that it is based on disinformation and misdirection.

An example of this appears in a Boortz Report – Nealz News - where he states: “So now we have people showing up around the country calling for a boycott of BP…Can someone please tell me on what level of insanity a boycott of BP makes sense? A few things to consider: (1) The Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig did not belong to BP. It belonged to a group named Trans-ocean. (2) At the time of the explosion there were 126 people working on the Trans-ocean rig. Only 8 of them were BP employees. (3) The vast majority of BP stations - the targets of the boycott - are privately owned by small businessmen. The employees of these stations are not employees of BP. (4) What sense does it make to, on one hand, try to starve BP of money while, on the other hand, demanding that they pay the costs of the cleanup? - - So what happens when you boycott your local BP station? First, you do little, if anything, to actually cause any financial harm to BP itself. The people you do hurt are the local businessmen who own and operate the stations and your neighbors that they hire. If your…boycotts are successful all you are managing to do is to put people in your own community out of work.

On June 14th, The New York Times Headline read: “Efforts to Repel Gulf Oil Spill Are Described as Chaotic.” Part of the report includes: “It was late May. Oil had been creeping into the passes around Grand Isle. Two fleets of fishing boats were supposed to be laying out boom, the long floating barriers to corral oil and protect the fragile marshes of Barataria Bay. But the boats were gathered on the inland side of the bay — the wrong side — anchored idly as the oil oozed in from the Gulf of Mexico. BP officials said they had no way of contacting the workers on the boats…For much of the last two months, the focus of the response to the Deepwater Horizon explosion has been a mile underwater, 50 miles from shore, where successive efforts involving containment domes, top kills and junk shots have failed, and a spill-cam shows tens of thousands of barrels of oil hemorrhaging into the gulf each day. Closer to shore, the efforts to keep the oil away from land have not fared much better, despite a response effort involving thousands of boats, tens of thousands of workers and millions of feet of containment boom. From the beginning, the effort has been bedeviled by a lack of preparation, organization, urgency and clear lines of authority among federal, state and local officials, as well as BP. As a result, officials and experts say, the damage to the coastline and wildlife has been worse than it might have been if the response had been faster and orchestrated more effectively…” These are good observations – but – where are the current solutions?

Human nature is fascinating. We can be aghast as catastrophes and errors in judgment that demonstrate ineffectiveness are observed. But – what about human life? What about the Christian Life-Choices – how effective have they been? In II Peter 1:5-8, a partial list is given that must be foundational for necessary Life-Choices. Note what is stated: “make every effort to add to your faith goodness; to goodness, knowledge; to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness; to godliness, brotherly kindness; to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ… Kept from being ineffective and unproductive – does that describe you? Obviously, these are Christian values and possibilities that are provable and functional! Consider these things with me!

Fleece The Sheep – and – Fleece Them Some More

Is it fair when a sheep has been shorn to try and get more fleece from that same sheep? To do so, will it not begin to cut into the flesh of the sheep? Will that sheep become impaired to the point that its contribution to wool production may actually begin to decrease? Using this as a metaphor, are we as citizens of this nation being viewed as sheep to be fleeced? When we have been shorn, are there ways being devised to fleece us yet some more?

On a broader and more general area, should you ever be required to surrender your Constitutional rights due to a government action or enactment? Is the Constitution of the United States meant as a safeguard for human rights and liberties? A friend (with whom I most often disagree) has written an interesting Blog – “The Constitution is Un-Constitutional?” He raises some interesting thoughts and points (most points he should sit upon and maybe he’d get the correct point). This past week his thoughts were timely, in a way, for my wife and me when we visited the Doctor’s Office for a routine check-up. We were handed a sheet that was required to be filled in “to update our file…” Most people just affix their signature to such a document without much of a glance regarding the content. One section of the form had to do with the collection of fees and the use of a Collection Agency if payment was not received. However, there was this sentence contained in that paragraph which read: “I hereby waive my Constitutional rights in this State of Residence, as well as in any other State forever.” My wife and I refused to sign it and were told: “Then you cannot be seen by the Doctor!” Before we left the office, we were asked to visit with the Office Manager. Her basic approach was: “Well – this is part of Obamacare.” We disagreed with her premise and said they had gone too far in asking any patient (much less citizen) to wave his or her Constitutional rights forever (forever is a long and interminable length of time - “Forever” means: “without ever ending; eternally…continually; incessantly; always”).

From The Law Dictionary, we find this definition of Waiver: “Waiver Legal Definition – (1) A voluntary relinquishing of a right or privilege. Although a waiver may result from an explicit surrender or by circumstances, courts frown on accepting waivers of constitutional rights. The party waiving a right must have knowledge of that right and the informed intention of surrendering it. (2) The paper by which a person surrenders his or her rights; for example, when the courier delivered the package, the recipient may sign a waiver relieving the former of any further responsibility. An Expressed Waiver: A deliberate and voluntary waiver. An Implied Waiver: A waiver of certain rights based upon the action of the waiving party. For example, if a person tells a courier he does not care what condition a package is in as long as it arrives by a certain time, that person has waived the right to require the courier to treat the parcel with the normally expected care. A Prospective Waiver: A waiver of something that may occur in the future; for example, the right to participate in an award from a future, anticipated law suit. Prospective waivers are often deemed to be unenforceable, as the party giving up a right cannot, by definition, know the parameters of what is being given up.”

As Jesus prepares His Disciples for the task of communicating The Gospel throughout the world, He shares these words with them in Matthew 10:16-17 (The Message Translation): “Stay alert. This is hazardous work I'm assigning you. You're going to be like sheep running through a wolf pack, so…be as cunning as a snake, inoffensive as a dove. Don't be naive. Some people will impugn your motives; others will smear your reputation - just because you believe in me.” Sheep in a world of Wolves indicates there is danger lurking in many of life’s experiences. Sheep are timid, naïve and oftentimes stupid. One definition of “sheep” states: “a meek, unimaginative, or easily led person.” While the primary goal of a Christian life is to live righteous and holy lives, there is also the duty to stand for truth and to defend the weak, helpless and defenseless. Be gentle! Be wise! Be strong! Stand Up and Be Counted! Consider these things with me!

Languishing Language

Do words define who we are? The adage states: “Actions speak louder than words!” – that’s true in and of itself – but words are the expression of what most readily comes to mind for one to say. Words – our Dictionaries contain more than 450,000 of them. It is the way one verbally communicates with others in a constructive, cogent and discernible manner. How did profanity become the acceptable language of our day?

CMI (Culture and Media Institute) in a report by Nathan Burchfiel on June 7th, 2010 regarding the MTV Awards Program uses this sub-headline: “Music Network’s Movie Award Show Features 100 Swears In 122 Minutes.” The article contains the following: “Ready to make the censors’ ears bleed? That’s how Anna Kendrick summed up MTV’s attitude toward decency June 6 during the network’s annual Movie Awards broadcast. It wasn’t just the censors who endured a two-hour swear-fest. The television audience had the pleasure of hearing 30 percent of the vulgarities uttered throughout the night. A Culture and Media Institute review found the 122-minute show littered with at least 100 bleep-worthy words – that’s more than one per minute not including commercials…The network’s censors caught 70 curses…It would be difficult for MTV to claim these were accidental. The show seemed obsessed with using offensive language…” The response by MTV is contained in the following: “Update - The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that MTV has apologized. In a statement, the network said the show is a live televised event known for irreverent comedy and a party atmosphere where our guests speak more freely than they otherwise might…We sincerely apologize to those in our audience who were offended by any objectionable words that might have slipped by [the censors] for the live airing. The statement conspicuously lacks any pledge to tone down future shows.”

Moving from The Entertainment World to The Political Culture, there are critics of the President who state that he appears too cool and aloof – such as the BP issue in the Gulf of Mexico – and that he should show more emotion. How does that statement resonate in the President’s mind? How best can he - will he display more emotion? Will it be by his actions? Will it be based on his determination to remedy that which has been a failure for the past 51 days in the Gulf environmental debacle and disaster? What would you do to show you are “tough” when that is the order of the day? How does the culture respond when it wants to be seen as “tough” in the circumstances and situations of life? One has a glimpse of the attempt of the President in an Associated Press Release for today, June 8th by Tom Raum. Their headline (slightly edited by this Blog writer): “Obama Talks Tough On Spill; Derrieres In Peril.” The report states: “President Barack Obama says his talks with Gulf fishermen and oil spill experts are not an academic exercise. They're so I know whose derriere to kick. One target for the presidential foot: Tony Hayward, the embattled chief executive of BP. Obama was asked by Matt Lauer of NBC's Today about Hayward's past comments that: I want my life back, that the Gulf was a big ocean and that the environmental impact of this disaster is likely to be very, very modest. He wouldn't be working for me after any of those statements, Obama said, according to excerpts released by NBC. The interview was to air Tuesday. NBC aired portions and put out some excerpts Monday night. It was part of a stepped-up White House effort to show Obama is actively engaged in dealing with the worst oil spill in the nation's history, and to distance itself from the London-based oil giant…” Is that valid emoting? Is that toughness?

Proverbs 10:19 (NLT) states: “Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.” The NIV renders it: “When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.” The President is a man who loves to “talk” and does it well – but rhetoric is a far cry from practical action. There is an old Hymn that contained a lyric: “What you are – Speaks so loud – the world can’t hear what you say! They’re looking at your walk – not listening to your talk…” The enjoinders of Scripture are: “Speak the truth in love…let your yes, be yes and your no, be no…respond with kindness – not anger…” Ecclesiastes 5:2 teaches: “Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.” Consider these things with me!

The Daze Of Remembrance

We so easily and soon forget our history…important events…our heritage…the privilege of freedom and liberty…landmarks of conflict… One of the Landmark moments occurred 66 years ago - June 6th, 1944 – called D-Day, a day of determination to set captive peoples free. Cemeteries dot the landscape of Europe denoting the price that was paid as brave men died in the accomplishment of a great and worthy cause.

As Allied servicemen invaded Nazi-occupied Europe on this date, President Franklin Roosevelt addressed the nation and world as he offered the following remarks and prayer. “MY FELLOW Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer:
“Almighty God - Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph. They will be sore tried, by night and by day, without rest -- until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men's souls will be shaken with the violences of war.
“For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. They fight to let justice arise, and tolerance and good will among all Thy people. They yearn but for the end of battle, for their return to the haven of home. Some will never return. Embrace these, Father, and receive them, Thy heroic servants, into Thy kingdom.
“And for us at home -- fathers, mothers, children, wives, sisters and brothers of brave men overseas -- whose thoughts and prayers are ever with them -- help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great sacrifice. Many people have urged that I call the nation into a single day of special prayer. But because the road is long and the desire is great, I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts.
“Give us strength, too -- strength in our daily tasks, to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the material support of our armed forces. And let our hearts be stout, to wait out the long travail, to bear sorrows that may come, to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be.
“And, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee; Faith in our sons; Faith in each other; Faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events, of temporal matters of but fleeting moment let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose. With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogancies. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace, a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men - a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil. Thy will be done, Almighty God. Amen.”

That was then – but what about now? Psalm 33:10-18 shares these basic and important truths: “The LORD foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord…From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind…He who forms the hearts of all, Who considers everything they do. No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,” Let us be among those who both know and remember these truths. Consider these things with me!

BP - Boomerang Pretentiousness

"Oily to Bed – Oily to Rise" – such is the plight of those trying to cope with the largest oil catastrophe ever. We are constantly made aware that BP (British Petroleum) is responsible for the costs and expenses on this contamination, as well as compensating those who have been impacted financially because of the ruptured oil lines more than 5,000 feet below the surface of the Gulf. Politicians posture themselves as being “in charge” but everyone knows they’re not! For them, “BP” has come to symbolize – “Boomerang Pretentiousness”! When it looked like the well might be successfully capped, our President was there to claim he was in charge from Day 1 and the “buck” stops with him. When the cap failed, then “BP” came into play again, namely: (a) its British Petroleum’s fault; and (b) the Boomerang Pretentiousness that allows one to think he can claim credit while bearing none of the blame! “Boomerang” (as a verb) means: “to come back or return; to cause harm to the originator; to backfire.” To be “pretentious” means: “being full of pretense or pretension; characterized by assumption of dignity or importance; making an exaggerated outward show; being ostentatious.”

Can this gushing oil be stopped? At some point, Yes! Can it be stopped immediately? So far, No! Every effort has been marked by failure and now some speculate that a nuclear detonation may be necessary to seal the pipeline. Posturing won’t do it! Rhetoric won’t do it! Frequent photo-op trips to the Gulf won’t do it! Increase of taxes won’t do it (they can sell their oil product to any number of other nations – China comes to mind). A Bloomberg report today indicates: “Since the April 20 explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig, which BP Plc leased from Trans-Ocean Ltd., administration officials have increasingly criticized BP, saying their faith in the company to contain the oil flowing from a mile-deep well was ill-placed. The blast killed 11 and triggered leaks that a government panel said spew an estimated 12,000 to 19,000 barrels of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico…“The more the images of oil in marshlands, and dead birds washing ashore, the angrier the American people are going to get…Largely, it’s been directed toward BP. But as the weeks turn into months you can feel, almost on a daily basis, the public’s furor start heading toward the White House.” It does seem as though there’s adequate blame to be spread around. However, the “blame-game” accomplishes little. This is true for a ruptured pipeline. It is likewise true for a ruptured life. We live in an “instant” world – everything designed to be faster, quicker, sooner – people line up for hours and days to buy the latest technology at inflated prices so they can be first and faster. The lifestyle and philosophy of life has little room or desire for patience. We have become a people who follow a mantra: “I know what I want – and – I want it now!”

A passage in Genesis 1:26-28 has been referenced as The Cultural Mandate. It states: “ Then God said, Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.“Basically, God’s plan was that man would act and behave responsibly with His Creation – that they would subdue the earth and develop superiority over all beasts. Man was also made with the desire to explore. There are countless examples of man’s achievements as he has honed his skills and mind to bring about great inventions and practical uses for them. The fact that Oil is Gushing at will in the Gulf and contaminating wildlife refuges is tragic. However, man with his ingenuity will – in time – arrive at a determination of how that Oil Pipeline can and will be subdued. In the meanwhile, “BP - Boomerang Pretentiousness” is evident and, it too, is gushing freely. Can either the Pipeline or Pretentiousness be easily contained? No! There was no contingency plan for such an event with the pipeline; and there is no restraint for the pretentious. Time will bring about a solution. Meanwhile, patience and understanding are needed! For a while, those working on the pipeline will continue with their routine of “Oily to bed – Oily to rise” until resolve and remedy are realized. Consider these things with me!

Booms and Busts

Oil - - Black Gold - - Drill, Baby, Drill - - Oil Rig Malfunction… There are 3858 offshore oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico – but now we have a singular focus because on April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon platform, 52 miles off-shore of New Orleans, (property of Trans-Ocean and leased to BP) exploded killing 11 people, and sank two days later. The resulting spill is expected by many to be the worst oil spill in US history, eclipsing the Exxon Valdez oil spill. There are hundreds of Offshore Oil Rigs all over the world and there are occasional mishaps (although rare) and potential disasters with them. Some of the Risk Factors are evidenced by: “In July 1988, 167 people died when Occidental Petroleum's Piper Alpha offshore production platform, on the Piper field in the UK sector of the North Sea, exploded after a gas leak. In March 1980, the 'flotel' (floating hotel) platform Alexander Kjelland capsized in a storm in the North Sea with the loss of 123 lives. In 2001, Petrobras 36 in Brazil exploded and sank five days later, killing 11 people.”

A concern was raised in a Wikipedia article and summary because of the times in which we live and the possibility of a Terrorist act: “Given the number of grievances and conspiracy theories that involve the oil business, and the importance of gas/oil platforms to the economy, platforms in the United States are believed to be potential terrorist targets. Agencies and military units responsible for maritime counter-terrorism in the US (Coast Guard, Navy SEALS, Marine Recon) often train for platform raids.”

Our History as a nation has seen The Gold Rush days as people headed West in search of their fortune; there was also the Uranium Rush and Search in Utah as we entered the Nuclear Age; and for more than 100 years, there has been a growing addiction for Oil. As the automobile became more popular, fuel was needed – and the search for Oil was on. Now – there is a problem. Fingers always can be pointed, but who really is to blame. The Government representatives can pontificate: “we will hold BP responsible…we will keep our boot on their neck…we will increase the tax on all oil companies…” – but – no one planned for this disaster and no one has an immediate solution for it. This is one Boom that will cause many to go Bust. Congressional Committee Hearings won’t solve it; Presidential Rhetoric can’t stop the flow of oil; Taxes being increased won’t prevent the oil from gushing into the Gulf waters…

Commentary by Pundits can be very harsh, as the Dick Morris Column in The Hill on June 1st, 2010 suggests: “Conservatives are so enraged at Obama’s socialism and radicalism that they are increasingly surprised to learn that he is incompetent as well. The sight of his blithering and blustering while the most massive oil spill in history moves closer to America’s beaches…calls to mind Jimmy Carter’s incompetence in the face of the hostage crisis. America is watching the president alternate between wringing his hands in helplessness and pointing his finger in blame when he should be solving the most pressing environmental problem America has faced in the past 50 years. We are watching generations of environmental protection swept away as marshes, fisheries, vacation spots, recreational beaches, wetlands, hatcheries and sanctuaries fall prey to the oil spill invasion. And, all the while, the president acts like a spectator, interrupting his basketball games only to excoriate BP for its failure to contain the spill.”

Question: Is there a possible application of Revelation 8:8-9 in this current disaster? The verses state: “The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea.
