FOUNDATIONAL DYSFUNCTION?

For quite a while, we have been subjected to the hew and cry regarding the separation of Church and State. It surfaces regularly regarding the celebration of Easter or Christmas, or whenever a public religious display or expression is forthcoming. While the Pledge of Allegiance still retains the words, “one nation, under God”, and while our coins and currency continue to indicate, “In God We Trust”, nevertheless there is an ongoing effort to eliminate any reference to God or Christ – in public – in our nation.

Michael Spencer is a writer and communicator. He has recently written: “The Coming Evangelical Collapse”, in which he states: “Evangelicalism needs a ‘rescue mission’ from the world Christian community… Some will continue to see conservatism and Christianity through one lens and will engage the culture war much as before – a status quo the media will be all too happy to perpetuate. A significant number, however, may give up political engagement for a discipleship of deeper impact. Is all of this a bad thing? Evangelicalism doesn't need a bailout. Much of it needs a funeral. But what about what remains? Is it a good thing that denominations are going to become largely irrelevant? Only if the networks that replace them are able to marshal resources, training, and vision to the mission field and into the planting and equipping of churches. Is it a good thing that many marginal believers will depart? Possibly, if churches begin and continue the work of renewing serious church membership. We must change the conversation from the maintenance of traditional churches to developing new and culturally appropriate ones..”

Michael Spencer continues:”…Will the coming collapse get Evangelicals past the pragmatism and shallowness that has brought about the loss of substance and power? Probably not. The purveyors of the evangelical circus will be in fine form, selling their wares as the promised solution to every church's problems. I expect the landscape of mega-church vacuity to be around for a very long time. Will it shake lose the prosperity Gospel from its parasitical place on the evangelical body of Christ? Evidence from similar periods is not encouraging. American Christians seldom seem to be able to separate their theology from an overall idea of personal affluence and success…We can rejoice that in the ruins, new forms of Christian vitality and ministry will be born. I expect to see a vital and growing house church movement. This cannot help but be good for an evangelicalism that has made buildings, numbers, and paid staff its drugs for half a century. We need new evangelicalism that learns from the past and listens more carefully to what God says about being His people in the midst of a powerful, idolatrous culture…”

Consider these things with me - - - There are basic eternal truths that should not be ignored as Spencer’s thoughts are pondered and ruminated. The first truth pertains to what Jesus taught regarding the wheat and the weeds – Matthew 13:24-30, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds? He said to them, An enemy has done this. So the servants said to him, Then do you want us to go and gather them? But he said, No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn. The second truth pertains to the Lord’s declaration in Matthew 16:18, “…I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it…” The Lord has an eternal plan and we see parts of it gradually unfolding. It should not cause one any panic or undue fear because the Lord has determined a precise time and an exact moment when all of the absurdity and confusion of mankind will arrive at His Termination Point. Until then, in the ebb and flow of Christianity (so-called), one will realize disappointments and disillusionment. We must remind ourselves that positionally we (and The Church) are safe and secure in the hollow of our Lord’s Hand – and – nothing – ever – shall be able to remove us from His Grip or separate us from His Love!

ENFILADING

Those who serve their country during wartime and in battle areas know what it is to be subjected to an enemy who is relentless in enfilading. When a command is given: “Ready! Aim! Fire!” the troops respond with an enfilade. It is: “A firing in the direction of the length of a trench, or a line of parapet or troops, etc.; a raking fire; to pierce, scour, or rake with shot in the direction of the length of, as a work, or a line of troops.” Most have heard of the Gatlin Gun. It was first used in the Civil War by the Union Forces. The man who invented it – Dr. Richard J. Gatlin – wrote that he made it “…to reduce the size of armies and so cut down on the number of deaths by combat and disease.” That rationale has led to more sophisticated weaponry of modern warfare to the point where great numbers of people can be vaporized by nuclear weapons and combat soldiers can be wounded or die by the use of a variety armor piercing devices.

In the area of political debate, enfilading is a device and method used in terms of verbal attack where the desire is to marginalized a political opponent by either misquoting or by means of ridicule. Reference was made to this approach in yesterday’s post on the subject of “kerfuffling”! Accuracy and Truth are no longer championed. A statement is lifted out of context: “I want President Obama to fail…” and the enfilading begins. What gets lost in the immediate is that last year 51% of Democrats polled wanted President Bush to fail, and almost as many indicated that General Patraeus would lie to Congressional Committees about the War in Iraq. Why? Because they were not interested in the facts delivered by the Field General in charge of the Surge, but in their presupposition that the War was already lost. And so, Posters were circulated about a General who was serving his country that read: “Not General Patraeus but General BETRAY-US”! It not only sets out to marginalize, but also includes destruction of reputation, personal integrity, and the brilliant strategy and accomplishment of a career officer. In this instance, they failed! However, those given to enfilading are versatile and opportunistic. They shift their guns from Bush, Cheney to other targets and a different debate. Currently, it is Rush Limbaugh being portrayed as the “head of the Republican Party” even though he has never run for political office, nor has he sought to do so.

What must be remembered here is a more subtle strategy. Since the new administration has assumed responsibility for the nation, members of Congress have raised the issue regarding The Fairness Doctrine - “The policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission that became known as the Fairness Doctrine is an attempt to ensure that all coverage of controversial issues by a broadcast station be balanced and fair. The FCC took the view, in 1949, that station licensees were public trustees, and as such had an obligation to afford reasonable opportunity for discussion of contrasting points of view on controversial issues of public importance…” The lament has been that the airwaves are saturated with Conservative Talk Show Hosts, and there are few, if any, comparable Liberal Talk Shows on Radio. It cannot be denied that effort was made to have an entire network devoted to a Liberal Point of View. The problem – there was no audience committed to that network or such programming.

Consider these things with me - - - Those who represent the Truth will be subjected to verbal enfilading and be both marginalized and/or ridiculed along the way. Just look at the life of Jesus Christ and accusations that were directed at Him. In Luke 5:29-33, “And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? And Jesus answered them, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. And they said to him, The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” The task of serving Christ is daunting and the road may lead one “through the valley of the shadow of death”, but at such times and in such places one must continually remember – even there – The Lord Continues To Be My Shepherd – and because He is, I have everything that I need and I can endure everything for Him!

KERFUFFLING

Some pithy statements from years ago were: “Look before you leap!”; and, “Think before you speak!” It seems that nowadays we find far too many who keep on speaking until they can think of something to say. The result is a growing confusion and considerable disorder. Perhaps we should conclude: “There’s a whole lot of kerfuffling going on! To kerfuffle is to be part of: “a disorderly outburst or tumult; a commotion.”

An example of this is based upon the recent address given by Rush Limbaugh at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). In his address, Rush Limbaugh reiterated what he had said previously regarding the economic direction of this nation. The context of what he said is the following: “This notion that I want the President to fail, folks, this shows you a sign of the problem we've got. That's nothing more than common sense and to not be able to say it, why in the world do I want what we just described, rampant government growth indebtedness, wealth that's not even being created yet that is being spent, what is in this? What possibly is in this that anybody of us wants to succeed? Did the Democrats want the war on Iraq to fail! They certainly did. They not only wanted the war in Iraq to fail, they proclaimed it a failure. There's Dingy Harry Reid waiving a white flag: ’This war is lost. This war is….They called General Petraeus a liar before he even testified. Mrs. Clinton said she had to, willingly suspend disbelief in order to listen to Petraeus. We're in the process of winning the war. The last thing they wanted was to win. They hoped George Bush failed. So what is so strange about being honest to say that I want Barack Obama to fail IF HIS MISSION IS TO RESTRUCTURE AND REFORM THIS COUNTRY SO THAT CAPITALISM AND INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY ARE NOT ITS FOUNDATION? WHY WOULD I WANT THAT TO SUCCEED?”

The phrase one hears most often in recent media presentations is: “I want Barack Obama to fail!” The statement is taken out of context – but – that best serves the purpose of those who wish to Kerfuffle (and encourage others of like mind to do the same thing). A Play by William Shakespeare, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING comes to mind at this point. A summary of the play indicates: “The mode in which the innocent Hero before the altar at the moment of the wedding, and in the presence of her family and many witnesses, is put to shame by the most degrading charge, false indeed, yet clothed with every appearance of truth, is a grand piece of theatrical effect in the true and justifiable sense.” The misrepresentation allows for the kerfuffle (the disorderly outburst and condemnation) that is not based upon fact or reality but upon supposition and rumor and innuendo. It could also lead to a ruined life and relationship.

Rush Limbaugh defends his position with these words: “…there's some people you can't say you want the President to fail. Ladies and gentlemen of the United States, the Democrat Party has actively not just sought the failure of Republican presidents and policies and now wars for the first time, the Democrat Party doesn't stop at failure. Talk to Judge Robert Bork or Justice Clarence Thomas about how they tried to destroy lives, reputations and character, and I'm supposed to say I don't want the President to fail? We're in for a real battle. We are talking about the United States of America -and there will always be an America, don't misunderstand me - we're talking about it remaining the country we were all born into and reared and grown into. And it's under assault. It's always under assault. But it's never been under assault like this from within before. And it's a serious, serious battle.”

Consider these things with me - - - The person claiming to follow Christ is obligated to insert “truth” into the culture of which we are a part. The words of Psalm 40:9-10 are very appropriate: “I proclaim righteousness…; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O Lord. I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth…” Our guideline is given in Ephesians 4:15, “…speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.” We are not to kerfuffle but to care and speak truthfully and lovingly as we defend justice and equity in a culture that is trending toward running amuck.

EXTRAPOLATION VERSUS INTERPOLATION

One of the several goals of the new administration in Washington, DC pertains to a form of Universal Healthcare. The suggestion is that 47 million people are without Health Coverage and the Government must assume the responsibility to provide coverage for all residing within our borders. That coverage will very likely provide coverage for those who are not yet citizens, as well as for those who are illegal aliens. In the address President Obama presented before the Joint Session Congress and to the nation made reference to the following: “The cost of health care now causes a bankruptcy in America every 30 seconds.” Is this true or is this a mischaracterization?

The issue rests upon extrapolation versus interpolation. The explanation and rationale for this can be found in The American Heritage explanation regarding Extrapolation and Interpolation. They are, “A mathematical procedure which estimates values of a function for certain desired inputs given values for known inputs. If the desired input is outside the range of the known values this is called EXTRAPOLATION, if it is inside then it is called INTERPOLATION. The method works by fitting a curve to two or more given points and then applying this function to the required input.” Gary Langer is Director of Polling at ABC News. He observes the following in his report entitled, “The Numbers”! In that article on March 05, 2009, he notes the following: “Medical Bankruptcies: A Data-Check (responses from the lead author of the Harvard study, Dr. David Himmelstein, are included) “President Obama’s kicking off his health care reform today in the worst possible way: with a mischaracterization of data. The cost of health care now causes a bankruptcy in America every thirty seconds, Obama said at the opening of his White House forum on health care reform. The problem: That claim, based on a 2001 survey, is simply unsupportable. The figure comes from a 2005 Harvard University study saying that 54 percent of bankruptcies in 2001 were caused by health expenses. We reviewed it internally and knocked it down at the time; an academic reviewer did the same in 2006. Recalculating Harvard’s own data, he came up with a far lower figure – 17 percent. A more recent study by another group, approaching it another way, indicates that in 2007 about eight-tenths of one percent of Americans lived in families that filed for bankruptcy as a result of medical costs. That rings a little less loudly than “one every 30 seconds.”

The ABC News article continues with these observations: “A good part of the problem is definitional. The Harvard report claims to measure the extent to which medical costs are ‘the cause’ of bankruptcies. In reality its survey asked if these costs were “a reason” – potentially one of many – for such bankruptcies. Beyond those who gave medical costs as “a reason,” the Harvard researchers chose to add in any bankruptcy filers who had at least $1,000 in unreimbursed medical expenses in the previous two years. Given deductibles and co-pays, that’s a heck of a lot of people. Moreover, Harvard’s definition of “medical” expenses includes situations that aren’t necessarily medical in common parlance, e.g., a gambling problem, or the death of a family member. If your main wage-earning spouse gets hit by a bus and dies, and you have to file, that’s included as a “medical bankruptcy.” When I asked the lead author, Dr. David Himmelstein, about his definitions of medical bankruptcy back in 2005, he said, “It’s a judgment call,” and added that any death, for example, “to our mind is a medical event.” A last problem was sampling: The Harvard researchers surveyed bankruptcy filers in five federal court districts accounting for 14 percent of bankruptcies nationally; projecting this to the other 86 percent is sketchy. Said Himmelstein: “Obviously the extrapolation is rough.”

Consider these things with me - - - Truth is vital and basic for every interpersonal relationship and for all government. Ephesians 4:25 [The Message] summarizes it this way: “What this adds up to, then, is this: no more lies, no more pretense. Tell your neighbor the truth. In Christ's body we're all connected to each other, after all. When you lie to others, you end up lying to yourself.” This is as plain and simple as it gets, and if avoided – it is to one’s own peril – personally or governmentally!

BLUNDERBUSSES OR BRAINWASHED

There are several phenomena occurring. Today, Wednesday – March 4^th – there has been a solicitation an call for this to be a National Day of Prayer and Fasting. On www.christianpost.com the following article appears: CHRISTIANS TO HOLD NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER, FASTING FOR AMERICA by Jennifer Riley. She writes: “Christians nationwide are joining together for a national day of prayer and fasting for America on Wednesday. Participants will pray and confess their sins to God and commit to obeying His laws in hopes that God will rescue the country from its current economic crisis. America's greatest need is to cry out to God about the sins in America, humble ourselves in prayer and start obeying what God says in the Holy Bible…” Question: Where has this been publicized? Who knew? How many will participate?

At the same time, an article entitled, THE OBAMA ECONOMY, Wall Street Journal - March 3^rd, 2009 has been published. It reviews the financial plight of our nation and what they consider to be a root cause for the present state of affairs: “As 2009 opened, three weeks before Barack Obama took office, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 9034 on January 2, its highest level since the autumn panic. Yesterday the Dow fell another 4.24% to 6763, for an overall decline of 25% in two months and to its lowest level since 1997. The dismaying message here is that President Obama's policies have become part of the economy's problem. Americans have welcomed the Obama era in the same spirit of hope the President campaigned on. But after five weeks in office, it's become clear that his policies are slowing, if not stopping, what would otherwise be the normal process of economic recovery. From punishing business to squandering scarce national public resources, Team Obama is creating more uncertainty and less confidence -- and thus a longer period of recession or sub-par growth. So what has happened in the last two months? One negative revelation has been the way he has chosen to spend his scarce resources on income transfers rather than growth promotion. Most of his "stimulus" spending was devoted to social programs, rather than public works, and nearly all of the tax cuts were devoted to income maintenance rather than to improving incentives to work or invest. His Treasury has been making a similar mistake with its financial bailout plans. The banking system needs to work through its losses, and one necessary use of public capital is to assist in burning down those bad assets as fast as possible. Yet most of Team Obama's ministrations so far have gone toward triage and life support, rather than repair and recovery."

Meanwhile, Fox News Reports today: RUSSIAN SCHOLAR SAYS U.S. WILL COLLAPSE NEXT YEAR. “If you're inclined to believe Igor Panarin, and the Kremlin wouldn't mind if you did, then President Barack Obama will order martial law this year, the U.S. will split into six rump-states before 2011, and Russia and China will become the backbones of a new world order. Panarin might be easy to ignore but for the fact that he is a dean at the Foreign Ministry's school for future diplomats and a regular on Russia's state-guided TV channels. And his predictions fit into the anti-American story line of the Kremlin leadership. There is a high probability that the collapse of the United States will occur by 2010," Panarin told dozens of students, professors and diplomats Tuesday at the Diplomatic Academy… Vladmir Putin, the former president who is now prime minister, has likened the United States to Nazi Germany's Third Reich and blames Washington for the global financial crisis that has pounded the Russian economy…”

Consider these things with me - - - It is possible The End is nearer than most suspect. However, even if that is the case, the person of faith should remember and practice PSALM 20:6-9, “Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven with the saving might of His right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright.” Many suggest that one should read the end of The Book (Bible) – We Win! God will prove Himself faithful to all who trust in Him. There’s a growing list of places and people who have duped many and are not worthy of trust. But The Lord – you can always Trust In Him – He Never Fails and is Always Faithful to His people!

ROBIN HOOD VIRUS

There is an abundance of commentary in terms of the Financial Markets and Meltdown in our country, as well as in the World Markets. Some of the commentary in this country allows that our current economic collapse is due to dishonesty, greed and mismanagement. Basically, permissiveness began to rule the markets and reality of values was pushed aside. People were permitted to borrow against a floating (ARM) interest rate on housing that had become inflated in value. Thus, the housing boom has become a housing bust.

It is very revealing to read an item in today’s news regarding Bank Of America. The story appears on Financial Times.Com and states: “Bank of America’s request for $20 Billion of government money to prop up its acquisition of Merrill Lynch was a “tactical mistake” that made the bank appear as weak as Citigroup, Ken Lewis, Bank of America’s chief executive told the Financial Times on Monday. Mr. Lewis vowed to stay on as chief executive of the North Carolina-based bank until it paid back the $45 Billion of government money it received under the US Treasury’s bank recapitalization program, possibly within two to three years….In hindsight, it was a tactical mistake because it put us in the same category as Citigroup…We could still have had 8% tier 1 capital after a $15 Billion loss but we wanted a cushion… it would have been better to request only $10 Billion for that purpose…that could have helped to curtail investor fears that further problems were in the offing. The scale of government assistance for Bank of America and Citigroup has helped fuel speculation that outright nationalization could be necessary for one or both banks. The fears have contributed to a 76 per cent drop in Bank of America’s share price since its acquisition of Merrill Lynch closed on January 1…”

A revealing phrase in the above article is – “BUT WE WANTED A CUSHION”! The Robin-Hood-Virus has a way of blinding ones reality factors and allowing for the greed factor to rule. Government Handouts of Billions of Dollars to those who are oriented to Capital Growth and Gain is the wrong remedy for the Robin-Hood-Virus. It seems as though we are bent in the direction of continuing this process and procedure with the soon to be announced Budget. Redistribution of Wealth has just begun! It is not even a clear view of the “tip of the iceberg” in terms of what lies ahead. We are Slouching Toward Gomorrah and Bankruptcy – and – there seems to be no way to slow or alter that momentum. At this rate, Capitalism will succumb to Socialism and the only concern will be – “WE WANTED A CUSHION” – corporately and personally.

Consider these things with me - - - It is never too late to correct ones direction and to get turned around. This is the serious possibility and goal of true HOPE. In the ministry of Jesus Christ, He clearly set before anyone who would follow Him the Cost Factors of doing so. In Luke 14:28-32, Jesus states: “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, This fellow began to build and was not able to finish. Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.” The question for this consideration is: “Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?” The Robin-Hood-Virus is now impacting the Dow Industrial Average and Stock Markets around the world. There is a basic loss of confidence. Investors can no longer trust those who chose to gamble away the investment and retirement funds of countless numbers of people. In this time of concern, or discouragement, or maybe even anxiety, we would do well to remind ourselves of the words from a Worship Chorus: “God will make a way, Where there seems to be no way; He works in ways we cannot see; He will make a way for me! He will be my guide; Hold me closely to His side; With love and strength for each new day, He will make a way, He will make a way! Let your Hope, Trust and Confidence be in the Faithful God Who will make a way, and Who will provide for all of ones needs, according to His riches in glory - by Christ Jesus!

FORMS OF FILICIDE

To indicate that our nation is living in changing and strange times is an understatement. What is occurring is something more than just a mere transition. If our nation shifts from being Capitalist to Socialist – that is a major revamping of the very foundations upon which we were founded. Additionally, if we somehow lose our moral compass and conscience as a nation, we will become directionless and susceptible to new behaviors that are borne out of a personal rationale that has freed itself from either ethical or moral values and standards. We are beginning to see sad evidences and consequences of these behaviors.

Last month (February 12), we were confronted and shocked by the headline that read: “Bridges TV Founder Charged with Wife’s Beheading”! This did not occur in some other country where beheading is a so-called “religious practice.” This occurred in Buffalo, NY at a radio station. Sadly, it leaves two children aged four and six deprived of their Mother and separated from their imprisoned Father. Also, we read and hear all too frequently about missing children and their subsequent deaths. A lurking question pertains to whether or not “filicide” lurks in the psyche of a growing number of people within our culture.

FILICIDE is not historically new. It is the deliberate act of a parent killing his or her own son or daughter. The word filicide derives from the Latin word “filius” meaning "son". In some cultures, killing a daughter who is deemed to have disgraced the family is a common occurrence (see honor killing). A 1999 US Department of Justice Study concluded that between 1976 and 1997 in the United States, mothers were responsible for a higher share of children killed during infancy while fathers were more likely to have been responsible for the murders of children age 8 or older. Furthermore, 52% of the children killed by their mothers were male (maternal filicide), while 57% of the children killed by their fathers were male (paternal filicide).Sometimes there is a combination of murder and suicide in filicide cases. There are some historical examples of Filicide:

• Ptolemy XII of Egypt had his daughter Berenice IV and her husband beheaded in 55 BC. This was after she had dethroned him and poisoned her sister, Cleopatra VI.
• Ivan IV of Russia (Ivan the Terrible) killed his son and heir to the throne in a fit of rage.
• Peter the Great of Russia had his son tortured to death, being present at several of the torture sessions and allegedly participating in some of them.
• Josef and Magda Goebbels poisoned their six children, in order to protect them from the invading Soviet Army, before committing suicide.
• Motown singer-songwriter Marvin Gaye was shot to death by his father on April 1, 1984.
• Professional wrestler Chris Benoit killed his seven year old son Daniel, along with his wife and himself, on June 23, 2007.

We also forget the example of Forms of Filicide in the Bible – (a) Cain killing his brother Abel; (b) the sacrificing of children to Molech in the fire (Leviticus 20:1-5). The force of the Lord’s intent is summarized in Leviticus 18:21, “Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molech, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.”

Consider these things with me - - - It is obvious that we need to return to our moral base and core values. In the midst of changing and difficult times, the compassionate Lord’s invitation remains as the clarion call to the troubled in heart, or soul, or mind – Matthew 11:28-30 where Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened - I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” REST for your soul! These words resonate for the confused, disenfranchised, uncertain, directionless, weary and oppressed. Just COME! Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near! Just COME! Implement Proverbs 3:5-6 (The Message): “Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on your own.
